Apply for a European Professional Card

Applying for a European Professional Card (EPC)

The European Professional Card (EPC) is proof that your professional qualification is recognized by another EU/EEA state. For certain professions, this is issued upon application in an electronic procedure (EPC procedure).

Advantages of the European Professional Card

  • The authorities in your country of origin will help you with your application and check that it is correctly filled in and complete. They will also verify the authenticity and validity of your documents.
  • If you want to apply for establishment or temporary provision of services in another EU country in the future, your dossier is already in the system and you do not need to upload your documents a second time. This will save you time on further applications.
  • If the authorities responsible for your application do not take a decision within the specified period, recognition is automatic (fictitious approval).

Service details

You would like to pursue your profession temporarily or permanently in another EU or EEA country. You are a

  • Nurse for general care
  • Pharmacist
  • Physical therapist
  • Mountain guide
  • Real estate agent

Additional requirements if your qualifications were acquired outside the EU:

  • Your qualification has already been recognized in a member state of the EU.
  • You have practiced your profession in this member state for at least 3 years after your qualification was recognized.
If you have a different profession from the ones stated above, you still have to undergo the standard procedures for the recognition of your professional qualification. The EPC procedure may be extended to further professions in the future.

First, log in to the authentication service "EU Login" (Forms & Online Services), choose a username and password.

Authenticate online

Create your profile in the authentication portal with the following personal data:

  • Identity card or passport number
  • Last name
  • Nationality
  • Contact details (address, e-mail address, phone number, etc.).
Your EPC will contain this personal data.

Apply for EPC

After you have created your profile, you can apply for the EPC. To do this, switch to the home page. In the course of your application, you will be told which documents the host country needs to recognize your professional qualification. You can upload these documents directly. Please upload each document as a separate file.

  • Then submit the application together with the documents to the responsible authority of your country of origin.
  • The responsible authority will process your application and, if necessary, send it to the authorities of the host country for further processing.
Attention! Once you have submitted your application, you can no longer change your personal data yourself.

An update can only be made by the authority that is processing your file. However, you can update your contact details in the portal at any time.

You can track the processing status of your application online at any time and reuse documents already uploaded for new applications in other host countries.

Print EPC

After your application has been approved, you can generate an EPC certificate in PDF format. The EPC certificate contains a reference number. This reference number will allow your future employer to verify the validity of your EPC online.

Required documents

  • Documents required for professional recognition in the host country concerned

You can find out which documents are required in each case by using the quick query function on the EPC home page.

The authorities may require certified copies of the documents you uploaded during the electronic application process.

  • In case of permanent establishment: unlimited
  • In case of temporary or occasional activity: usually 18 months
  • If there are health or safety aspects: 12 months
(Professions with public health or safety implications, unless they are subject to automatic recognition, e.g. physical therapist)

You can find out the estimated fee by using the quick query function on the EPC home page.

Right to practice the profession

Please note that, as a rule, the EPC does not automatically confer a right to practice (exception: occasional and temporary services with no impact on public health or safety).

If you plan to establish yourself permanently, you may need to register with a professional organization in the host country or provide certain proof (e.g. regarding reliability or health) before you start to practice. Check with a Single Point of Contact or the host country authorities to see if this is required in your case.

Note: You cannot use the service of the Single Point of Contact in the application procedure for the European Professional Card itself.
