Grammar school, registration

The parents of all students in the 4th grade of elementary school receive an educational recommendation for their children in the second school term. In the school year 2020/21, the recommendations will be issued on February 5, 2021. The registration of the students at the grammar school (Gymnasium) of their choice will than take place until February 26, 2021.

The educational recommendation will suggest a continuation of school attendance at a high school (Oberschule) or at a Gymansium. The educational recommendation can also be issued at the end of the school year (until July 9, 2021).

Performance survey

If the educational recommendation in grade 4 suggests attendance at an Oberschule, your child may still attend the Gymnasium if he or she participates in the written performance survey and one parent has participated in the mandatory counseling interview.

Transfer from other schools/school types

It is also possible to transfer from another Gymnasium, a high school or a special needs school. The decisive factor for a transfer from an Oberschule to a Gymnasium is academic performance.

For the Gymnasiums with specialized in-depth education and the Landesgymnasium St. Afra zu Meißen, there are additional admission requirements, which are described below.

Students are admitted to the Gymnasium after completing grade 4,

  • if an educational recommendation for the Gymnasium has been issued, or
  • if he or she has participated in a written performance survey and a parent has participated in the mandatory counseling interview.

Transfer from Oberschule to Gymnasium

Students in grades 5 and 6 of an Oberschule are admitted to the next higher grade of the Gymnasium upon application by the parents if

  • their grade point average for the subjects German, mathematics and English is 2.0 or better,
  • none of these subjects has been graded "sufficient" (4) or worse, and
  • the grade point average for all other subjects is better than 2.5, and
  • their attitude towards studying, the nature and expression of their academic performance and their development indicate that they are likely to meet the requirements of the Gymnasium.

After completing grade 10 of the Oberschule, students are admitted to grade 10 of the Gymnasium if

  • their grade point average for the subjects German, mathematics and English in the half-term report of grade 10 and the grade point average for all other subjects is better than 2.5, and
  • the student has passed the examination for the Realschulabschluss (secondary school diploma).

In the following exceptional cases, the responsible branch of the Landesamt für Schule und Bildung (State Office for Schools and Education) decides on a transfer to the Gymnasium:

  • Permission of admission to the Gymnasium at the beginning of the second school term in grade 5, 6 or 7
  • Permission of admission to the next higher grade of the Gymnasium after completion of grade 7, 8 or 9 of an Oberschule
    • The prerequisites in these cases are that both the grade point average for the subjects German, mathematics and English in the full-term report of the last grade attended and the average in all other subjects is better than 2.0.
    • In addition, the student’s attitude towards studying, the nature and expression of his or her academic performance and his or her development have to indicate that they are likely to fully meet the requirements of the Gymnasium.

Transfer from one Gymnasium to another

  • If there is a good reason, students may transfer from one Gymnasium to another.
  • The decision on admission is taken by the principal of the receiving Gymnasium
  • Students in grades 11 and 12 may only transfer to another Gymnasium if they can prove that they have already attended and are able to continue the mandatory courses of grade 11 of the receiving school.
  • A change of Leistungskurs (advanced performance course) is not permitted.

Students from abroad

  • Students who have attended a preparatory course with German as a second language may transfer to a Gymnasium if they have already attended a school equivalent to a Gymnasium in their country of origin or if the supervising teacher recommends attendance at the Gymnasium at the request of the parents.
  • The responsible branch of the Landesamt für Schule und Bildung (State Office for Schools and Education) decides on the transfer.

Admission to a Gymnasium with specialized in-depth education

  • In addition to the general admission requirements, admission to Gymnasiums with specialized in-depth education requires passing a special examination that must be taken at the receiving Gymnasium.
  • This exam determines the aptitude and talent of the applicants for the respective field of specialization.

Admission to the Landesgymnasium St. Afra

  • For admission to the Landesgymnasium St. Afra zu Meißen, in addition to the general admission requirements, it is necessary to pass a special examination to determine the applicant's special aptitude and talent for this educational path.
  • The examination is taken at the Landesgymnasium St. Afra zu Meißen.

Procedure

Parents register their children at the Gymnasium of their choice.

  • If your child does not have an educational recommendation for the Gymnasium, but you still wish to have him or her admitted to the Gymnasium, make an appointment for the mandatory counseling interview at the time of registration.
  • If, on the basis of the interview, the counselor came to the conclusion that your child should attend an Oberschule, but you would still like your child to continue his or her education at the Gymnasium, please inform the principal of the Gymnasium within 3 weeks after the counseling interview.

The decision on admission is made by the principal of the Gymnasium to which the child is intended to be transferred.

Note: The registration must be made jointly by both parents if they have joint custody. If one parent is unable to attend, a power of attorney and a copy of the ID of the absent parent must be presented.

Tip: Before the registration deadline expires, grammar schools and elementary schools hold information events in which the educational path at the grammar school, the foreign languages offered, and the profiles are presented.
